The creative talents of students enrolled in Vancouver Island University’s Visual Art program will be available for sale just in time for Christmas.
The annual VIU painting and print sale takes place at the Nanaimo campus Tuesday, Dec. 8 featuring paintings, prints and other media work such as graphics, ceramics and sculpture.
“Members of the public are invited to come and purchase a work of art for a very reasonable price and support our students,” said art professor Pamela Speight. “It’s a terrific bargain. Art pieces will range from around $50 to $500. It’s a great investment opportunity. You just might purchase a piece by a student who continues on to become a well-known professional artist.”
VIU’s Visual Art program offers a broadly-based approach to art-making, providing a sound technical foundation. Students are encouraged to experiment and take positive risks in pursuit of individual expression.
Faculty members are practising artists who are committed to excellence in teaching, and dedicated to providing students with an exciting, creative environment and the expertise required for careers in visual art.
Students at VIU can complete a Bachelor of Arts with a Minor in Visual Art. The department of Art and Design also offers a two-year Visual Art diploma and a two-year Bachelor of Fine Arts transfer program.
Students can also opt to study a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree (BFA) through Thompson Rivers University’s Open Learning program while studying at VIU. In the design fields, students have the option to study programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Graphics or a Bachelor in Interior Design.
The VIU painting and print sale runs from noon to 8 pm, Dec. 8 on the second floor of the Art building (#325) located across the lane from the Nanaimo Art Gallery and behind the daycare on Fifth Street. Metered parking is available in front of the Welcome Centre or in the student and visitor parking lots.
