Art students at Malaspina University-College will host their annual painting and printmaking sale at the Nanaimo campus, Wednesday, December 5.
The sale takes place from 10 am to 2 pm on the second floor of building 325 (Arts) located across the lane from the Nanaimo Art Gallery or behind the daycare.
“Members of the public are invited to come and purchase a work of art for a very reasonable price and support our students,” said art professor Jane Cole. Average prices for large paintings range between $200 and $400.
“It’s a tremendous bargain and investment opportunity,” said Cole. “You never know. You might purchase the work of a future Picasso.”
Student art work includes oil and acrylic paintings, silkscreen, etchings, drawings and photography. Faculty recommend coming to the sale early because pieces usually sell quickly.
Malaspina's Visual Arts program offers a broadly-based approach to art-making, said Cole. "Faculty members are practicing artists who are committed to teaching. We provide a sound foundation in visual art practice, and encourage experimentation and positive risk-taking in the expansion of individual expression. In addition to providing an exciting creative environment, we're dedicated to providing students with the expertise required for careers in Visual Art."
Students studying at Malaspina can complete a Bachelor of Arts with a Minor in visual arts. A Major is currently being planned. Students can also complete two years of the degree at Malaspina and then transfer to another institution to complete a BA in Fine Arts. Malaspina also offers a two-year diploma in visual arts.
