Applied Graphics Graduates Sweep Awards

June 12, 2003 - 5:00pm

  • Malaspina Applied Graphics graduates have had a very successful year.

  • 2nd year graduating students took ALL the awards in their student categories at two recent awards competitions (and a number have been accepted into 3rd year at design degree programs across the country.)

  • Faculty, the department and students can be very proud to be recognized not only on the island but provincially, and nationally as a design school that is producing top graduates in the field.

  • Students and the institution were honoured at Awards events recently in Victoria and Vancouver

Malaspina Graphic Design Student Takes Provincial Award: Malaspina once again (for the 3rd year in a row) won the prestigious Salazar awards at the Graphic Designers of Canada Society of British Columbia (GDC BC) Salazar Awards event at the UBC downtown Vancouver campus on June 5, 2003.

Congratulations to Mica Stewart 1st place winner for best graphic design graduate from a 2 year design program in the province and to Angelsea Saby who received the 2nd place award, an Honourable Mention. Awards are given to the best graduates of 2, 3 and 4 year diploma and degree programs. In addition for the 1st time our 2nd year winning graduate--Mica Stewart--has been asked to design the communications for the next Salazar Award (poster, entry forms, certificates etc.). Normally an outstanding student from a 3 or 4 year program such as Emily Carr is selected to do this so it is a special honour for us as a 2 year program to be selected to do this!

The Salazar Award was established by the Graphic Designers of Canada Society BC Chapter in 1986 in the memory of Enrique Salazar who was one of the founding members of the Society and the National Representative for the BC Chapter for two years. He was a partner in Salazar Graphics and taught graphic design at Capilano College until his death in June of 1985. Awards are cash honorariums of $500 through the GDC/BC and a Scholarship Fund, created in support of design education in BC. The criteria demands that written rationales accompany the work pieces. Work must involve the development of skills related to design and communication.

Malaspina applicants submitted a range of class projects that included magazine and newspaper design, posters, package design, and digital illustration. All submissions were on display in the lobby outside the UBC Robson Square campus theatre under the Vancouver Art Gallery. We received many compliments from provincial organizers about the calibre of work received from Malaspina. Separate certificates were also awarded too the institution in recognition of the winning students from our Applied Graphics program.

Malaspina Students Win Big at Island Rock Awards:

Our Graphic Design graduates also won ALL of the Awards in the Student Category at the GDC BC Vancouver Island Awards competition in May 2003. Awards of Merit certificates were presented to 2nd year students

  • Alicia Corsiglia  for her Portal cover (for our own Malaspina literary magazine)

  • Jazmine Gardner (former Navigator Art Director) for her typography calendar pages

And the big 1st place Rock Award trophy went to Carrie Anne Abernethy former Malaspina Graphics graduate (who went on to study at NSCAD) for a packaging program.

Awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort in Victoria on May 9 complete with live music, standup comedy and other entertainers. Fun was had by all including several former students in attendance. Nanaimo's Primal Communications (staffed by mostly Malaspina Graphics Grads) also won awards. Special thanks to students who did volunteer work for the event and who assisted judges (who came from across Canada and as far as Seattle).

A number of our Applied Graphics students (including Mica Stewart) have also been accepted into the 3rd year Honours Communication Design program at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and to the University of Alberta's Graphic Design degree program. Angelsea Saby (last year's Navigator Design Assistant) has been accepted into the ITAS program.

Malaspina Applied Graphics Professor and GDC Member Karen Hodgson says, "The class of 2003 produced some outstanding work of professional calibre across a range of communication vehicles. Each year we are impressed by the dedication, hard work and talent of our graduates. We are certainly proud of their accomplishments and of the success of the program in preparing them to compete on this level in a highly competitive and demanding occupation. Congratulations to the award winners and to all of the Applied Graphics graduates."
