A power outage is affecting most buildings on the Nanaimo campus due to the current windstorm. BC Hydro is investigating, and there is no estimated time for a return of power.
Due to widespread outages which may delay restoration times, afternoon classes are cancelled starting at 1:30 pm. VIU will remain open. Most buildings are in lock mode due to the power outage, if people need access to their building, contact Security at 250-740-6512. Employees should discuss with their managers, if their manager is available, whether to remain on campus or to finish up the remainder of the workday at home.
The following buildings are served by backup generator lighting:
  • Building 305
  • Building 300 (cafeteria)
We will continue to monitor BC Hydro’s website and updates will be available through VIU’s Safety App. Please see BC Hydro’s During an Outage webpage for tips on staying safe in a windstorm.
