75th Anniversary Business Alumni Reunion

November 26, 2010 - 3:14am

Since 1969 more than 2,000 people have graduated from the many business programs at Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina College and Malaspina University-College).

The Business Alumni Association believes that’s cause to celebrate. On June 11, 2011, former students from the undergraduate business programs are invited to attend a reunion that coincides with Vancouver Island University's (VIU) 75th anniversary.

The event will take place in buildings 250 and 300 at the Nanaimo campus and will include a keynote speaker, seminars covering retirement and careers, a family barbecue lunch, campus tours and a gala dinner at the end of the day. Some accommodation will be available on-campus and plans for child minding services are underway.

Committee member Tracy Gillis (Accounting Certificate 1986) points out that everyone with a business certificate, diploma or degree from a Malaspina or VIU program is eligible to attend. “It’s a chance for me to reconnect with my old school regardless of the name,” she says. “It’s also an opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues that I have lost touch with – and to make some new connections and to see the changes that have happened in the program since I was here.”

She adds that the whole day is based around reconnection and having fun. Trade shows will be hosted by alumni and opportunities to meet with people will abound.

Chris Cathers (Marketing 2003), chair of the organizing committee says the event will also provide excellent opportunities to network with other graduates. “I’m excited to see old faces and to meet new faces,” he says. “I’m also looking forward to seeing some of my past instructors and to meet new instructors. Malaspina, at the time, was a great place to study. You had an opportunity to know your instructors and classmates and to get a good quality education. It was one of those places where you met and made a lot of really great friends.”
