VIU Welcomes New Executive Director of Human Resources

Dan Vandersluis joins University in key leadership role

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is pleased to announce that Dan VanderSluis has recently joined VIU as the Executive Director of Human Resources. In this role Dan will support the development and execution of University-wide Human Resources strategies and ensure the high quality human resources services at VIU continue to attract, retain and motivate employees.

Before joining VIU Dan had a lengthy and successful career in the BC government as an executive director, regional manager, project manager, policy analyst, mediator and court investigator.

Most recently he held the position of Executive Director, Family Justice Services Division at the Ministry of Justice – the largest single provider of family law dispute resolution services in BC. During his tenure as Executive Director, his division had the highest employee engagement scores and was awarded the distinction of “Top 10 Best Places to Work” in the BC Public Service (2016).

A notable professional highlight was Dan’s leadership in the design, implementation and operation of a key Ministry of Justice reform initiative called the Justice Access Centres.  The Centres, which are nationally and internationally recognized for their service delivery structure, brought together government and non-government service providers to collaboratively provide enhanced - E access to thousands of BC residences seeking family and civil justice.

Dan holds a BA in Sociology from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and an MA in Human and Social Development from the University of Victoria. As well, he completed a Certificate in Conflict Resolution from the Justice Institute of BC and is a certified mediator with Family Mediation Canada. He is an experienced speaker who has presented at international, national and provincial conferences.

Outside of work, Dan takes full advantage of Vancouver Island life and enjoys athletic pursuits including hockey, mountain biking, running, surfing, and skiing. He is involved in local amateur sports, including volunteering as a youth soccer coach since 2010.
