Ben Hyman takes on key leadership role at University

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is pleased to announce that Ben Hyman has accepted a position as University Librarian, effective February 13. As University Librarian he is responsible for defining priorities and policies, providing leadership to area staff and leading the academic planning and development of the library.

Ben has had a successful career serving in a variety of technology, policy and service leadership roles with governments, non-profits, public and post-secondary libraries. For the last decade he has largely worked to develop open tools, approaches and structures that solve critical digital infrastructure, access and sustainability issues.

He says when he saw the progressive work being done at VIU in the library services area, he was thrilled to be given the opportunity to join the team.

“The VIU Library is punching above its class in so many ways,” said Hyman. ”It’s a real honour to be here working with the incredible library staff and the entire VIU community on the continual transformation of our library service.”

Ben says throughout his career he’s been fortunate to collaborate with many talented individuals while working in communities throughout Canada and the world. That said, he is thrilled to have the opportunity to focus his attention on VIU.

“I’ve been fortunate to work for a wide range of diverse communities and organizations and I’m excited to bring what I’ve learned from those experiences to VIU,” said Hyman. “It’s also a joy to know that I will be able to continue to do what I love here on Vancouver Island, a place I’ve called home for more than 20 years.”

Ben has received accolades for his work throughout his career including receiving the President’s Award from the British Columbia Library Association (2014), a Certificate of Excellence from the Canadian Federation of the Blind (2014) and the Premier’s Award (Branch) in Cross Governmental Integration, Lower Mainland (2009).

He holds a Master of Information Studies and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta. When not leading this key service at VIU, Hyman can be found enjoying his home in the community of Cedar and serving on the BC Cooperative Association Board.
