Striving to grow the game and support female athletes, VIU Mariners women’s basketball coach Tony Bryce, with the support of the Mariners coaching staff and student-athletes, is creating a training centre to encourage female athletes ages 12 to 18 to get out and play.
“We are very excited to build the VIU Mariners women’s basketball family,” says Bryce. “While skill development will be an integral part of the new training centre, players will also feel the community we build here at VIU.”
The training centre will focus on individual skill development building into team play concepts. Additionally, training will focus on one-on-one situations, three-on-three FIBA play and five-on-five action. The program will run on Sundays from 9 am until 12 pm at the VIU Gymnasium from September 15 until November 17.
“This initiative builds upon the strong community connection the Mariners have with the Nanaimo and the mid-Island basketball community,” says Stephanie White, VIU’s Director of High Performance Sports, Recreation and Physical Literacy. “The training centre provides an opportunity for young basketball athletes to learn from a PACWEST Coach of the Year as well as incredible role models in our Mariners student-athletes.”
Registration is now open to youth athletes and all proceeds from the centre will go towards supporting future generations of athletes in the Mariners women’s basketball program. Please contact Tony Bryce at tony.bryce@viu.ca for any questions about the program.
“I hope this program sparks a deeper passion for the game of basketball for these young female athletes,” says Bryce.
