The latest BC Labour Market Outlook report forecasts more than one million job openings in the province over the next 10 years.

Of these one million job openings, almost 80 per cent are expected to require post-secondary education and training. To respond to this need, Vancouver Island University (VIU) has launched a new service this fall that aims to enhance employer connections with students, build more networking opportunities and better prepare students for the transition from the classroom to the workplace.

To celebrate the start of VIU’s Career Connections Week, the Career Studio is hosting a grand opening event on Monday, November 21 from 11 am to 1 pm. The event will feature a tour of the space, a presentation on what Career Studio offers and network opportunities.

“We are excited offer this new service both to students looking for help with the job search process and to employers in the region who are looking for the kinds of skills, experiences and passions our students possess,” said Danielle Johnsrude, Director of the Centre for Experiential Learning, which oversees the new initiative. “This service was made possible thanks to provincial government funding, which enabled us to hire a career services officer and a student and employer engagement specialist.”

Career Studio is a drop-in service that assists VIU students with writing resumés and cover letters, interview preparation, searching for jobs and exploring potential careers. Located in Building 255, Room 204, it is staffed by a career services officer and students called career peer facilitators and the service is available for all students in all programs.

The Career Studio is also hosting three career fairs November 22, 23 and 24 to connect students directly with employers:

  • What to do with your BBA: Tuesday, November 22
  • What to do with your BSc: Wednesday, November 23
  • What to do with your BA: Thursday, November 24
