Virtual Field Trip: Safe in the Intertidal

Author: Pamela Murray

A Shoots with Roots adventure

Join Pam from the Shoots with Roots program at VIU's Milner Gardens & Woodland for a virtual field trip to the intertidal zone, where we'll look at how the animals who live there keep themselves safe beneath the rocks.

The challenge for this video is to pick an animal, learn how it keeps itself safe from predators, weather, and other dangers, and draw and/or write a "safety poster" to show what you've learned.

This virtual field trip supports the following Big Ideas in the British Columbia Science Curriculum:

  • K - Plants and animals have observable features
  • 1 - Living things have features and behaviours that help them survive in their environment
  • 2 - Water is essential to all living things, and it cycles though the environment
  • 3 - Living things are diverse can be grouped, and interact in their ecosystems
  • 4 - All living things sense and respond to their environment

..and touches on the following Content:

  • K - basic needs of plants and animals, adaptations of local plants and animals, living things make changes to accommodate daily and seasonal cycles.
  • 1 - names of local plants and animals, structural features of living things in the local environment, behavioural adaptations of animals in the local environment.
  • 2 - similarities and differences between offspring and parent (nudibranch adult vs. eggs).
  • 3 - biodiversity in the local environment.
  • 4 - sensing and responding (animals) The safety poster challenge supports curricular competencies for several grade levels.
