Sixty-eight of the most calculating local minds challenged their mathematical genus at the final round of the 2006 B.C. Colleges High School Math Contest at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo earlier this month.
On May 5 Grade 8 to 12 mid-island students from Dover Bay, John Barsby, Kwalikum, Ladysmith, Nanaimo Christian School, Wellington, Woodlands, the Malaspina International High School and Nanaimo District Secondary School gathered at Malaspina’s Nanaimo campus to answer 10 skill-testing multiple choice and five written math questions in two hours. In the end Dover Bay Secondary School contestants shined the brightest taking the top team prize in both the junior (Grades 8 to 10) and the senior (Grades 11 and 12) categories.
Ladysmith Secondary School’s junior team took home a second as did Kwalikum Secondary School’s senior team.
Individual junior-level winners included Daniel Fortin of Dover Bay Secondary School who took first place, second place for Cody Tupper of Nanaimo Christian School and third for Tommy Jung of Dover Bay Secondary School.
Individual senior-level winners included Robert Legassicke of Dover Bay Secondary in first place, a second for Devin Trudeau also of Dover Bay Secondary School and third for Laura Thorburn of Wellington Secondary School.
The top three in each category received a $100 prize.
The event was sponsored by School District 68, the Mid-Island Science, Technology and Innovation Council and Malaspina University-College. Malaspina has been one of 11 post-secondary schools to host the annual event over the past 12 years. The objective of the competition is to encourage students to have fun with math. The questions are created by a committee of faculty from colleges across the province.
More than 500 students participated in the preliminary round at their local high schools on March 1. Of those, nine were chosen from each school to attend the regional competition.
