A total of 236 students (up from 199 last year) graduated from the Faculty of Trades & Applied Technology at Malaspina University-College on Friday (June 24).
The students received certificates or diplomas for completing a variety of trades and vocational programs, including applied business technology, automotive mechanics, heavy duty/commercial transport mechanics, carpentry and residential construction, marine engine mechanics, professional baking, welding, and information technology and applied systems.
Malaspina president Rich Johnston congratulated the graduates for their hard work, tenacity and desire to learn. Fred MacDonald, Dean of Trades and Applied Technology, told graduates they are graduating at a time when "society really needs your skills and training."
Several students received special recognition at the graduation ceremony, including Kim Burton, graduate of the Level C welding program at Malaspina. She received an Outstanding Student Achievement Award and a certificate of appreciation for taking an active role in promoting trades and applied programs.
Raj Benji, a graduate of the inboard/outboard marine technician program, received three awards at Malaspina University-College’s Faculty of Trades & Applied Technology graduation ceremony Friday: the William Matthews Endowment Scholarship, a Malaspina University-College Graduation Award for academic achievement, and a certificate of appreciation for taking an active role in promoting trades. Benji has secured employment with Canoe Cove Yachts in Victoria.
Graduate Jared Tchorz received an engine stand from Baker Supply Automotive Industry & Marine for obtaining the highest academic achievement in the automotive service technician program.
