When classes wrap-up at the end of June, not all students will be singing the popular Alice Cooper song 'School's out.'
That’s be cause a few hundred elementary and high school students will hit the books during summer school July 4 to 28.
Malaspina University-College and Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District #68 are once again offering the popular summer program to students who want to improve their grades or get a head start on the next school year.
“We’re expecting about 200 students to sign up," said new principal Tony Bellavia. "It’s an opportune time for students to brush up on their skills or learn new skills, and earn credits at the same time.”
Summer school classes will be offered at Nanaimo District Secondary School in a variety of subjects, including Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Science from the grade six level to grade 11. Courses are taught by BC certified teachers.
Students enrol in summer school for many reasons, added Bellavia. “Some students want to preview a certain course they’ll be taking next year, while others want to review a course they’ve already completed in order to upgrade their mark or prepare for the next a cademic year.”
Students taking summer school for remedial purposes require a recommendation from their classroom teacher.
Retiring principal Larry Walrond began teaching summer school in 1972, and taught every year except one.
“Kids who come to summer school, and their parents, appreciate the opportunity,” he said. “They don’t always like it as first, but as the weeks go by, they realize it’s to their advantage. It serves a valuable purpose.”
Registration for summer school takes place Thursday, June 29, 12 to 3 pm, and Friday, June 30, 8:30 am to 3 pm at Malaspina University-College’s Nanaimo campus, 900 Fifth Street, Nanaimo, Building 200, Student Services. The cost is $125 per course. Each student can sign up for a maxium of two courses.
Classes are offered in two sessions: 8:45 to 10:15 am and 10:30 am to 12 noon. Information and registration forms can be picked up at your local school.
