Open Mic a popular part of Poets On Campus series at Malaspina

January 3, 2007 - 4:00pm

January means an exciting start to a new Poets On Campus series at Malaspina University-College.

The free, weekly evening gathering of readings and discussions with published poets had a popular start last semester, and has a talented repertoire planned for this semester.

One of the most popular evenings is the monthly Open Mic night with more than a dozen people turning up for every Open Mic night held in the fall.

“I think the turnout for Open Mics has been really fantastic,” said Ev Nittel, Poetry Events Coordinator and Malaspina creative writing student. “There's been a wide range of voices and talents including students, faculty and community members. We've had beginning poets and well-established poets reading their work side-by-side and I think that's been so enjoyable and good for everyone.”

The first Open Mic night of the spring semester is on Jan. 15, and is a great opportunity to listen to fresh original work or to test out your talents with an audience.

“I'd like to encourage everyone who wants to come out to do so,” said Nittel. “The vibe at Open Mic is very warm and we're a very approachable, cozy bunch.”

Poets On Campus is held every Monday, 6 to 8 p.m., in the Library Writing Centre on the Fourth Floor of building 305 at Malaspina’s Nanaimo campus. The Open Mic Night will be followed by an evening with Susan Musgrave, Jan. 22 and Mona Fertig, Jan. 29. Feb. 5 is the second Open Mic night of the semester. Then a reading with Steve Guppy on Feb. 12, Linda Rogers on Feb. 19, a third Open Mic on March 5,  Kate Braid on March 12, Jay Ruzesky on March 19, Robert Hilles on March 26 and ending with a final Open Mic on April 2.

Registration is required for Open Mic nights. To reserve your time in the spotlight, email Nittel at evnittel@gmail.com.
