Mr. Robin Kenyon was acclaimed as the new Board of Governors Chair during the regular meeting of the Board last week.
Kenyon, a Cowichan resident, has served the Board for the past four-and-a-half years and recently completed a two-year term as the Board’s Vice-Chair before stepping up to his new post.
Kenyon suggests it is his love for Malaspina, and his passion for making higher education accessible, that encouraged him to accept this position.
“My past experience with the Board has provided me with a solid foundation to take on the role of the Chair,” said Kenyon. “This is an exciting time to be involved with Malaspina and with the Board. The upcoming retirement of Malaspina President Rich Johnston, and the hiring of the new president Dr. Ralph Nilson, whom I’m excited to work with, will bring about change and new challenges.”
According to Kenyon, one of the greatest challenges he will face in the coming years will be advocating for university designation for Malaspina.
“I hope to bring a strong presence and voice, to both the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Premier’s office. It is also my aim to work diligently to establish a new Malaspina campus facility in Duncan,” said Kenyon.
Kenyon said his attachment to Malaspina began in 1978 while taking his first year of a survey technician program at Malaspina College.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and have been a Malaspina advocate ever since,” said Kenyon.
Malaspina has played a strong role in Kenyon’s family over the years. One of his sons is a recent graduate from the Forest Resources Technology program.
“I walked into Malaspina one day and found my son sitting in the same desk and the same classroom I had been assigned to over 20 years ago," said Kenyon.
"Malaspina provides access to post-secondary education and enriches the lives of those who come here seeking higher learning,” said Kenyon.
“I am indeed proud to have been given the opportunity to lead the Board, and to continue working with decision-makers at Malaspina in their quest to ensure that our region has access to quality education programs and services. I wish our outgoing Chair Don Hubbard the very best in his future endeavours, and thank him for his tireless contribution to the Board’s success over the past two years.”
Kenyon has been a resident of Cowichan for 42 of his 46 years. He is a partner and co-manager of Kenyon Wilson Professional Land Surveyors and Development Consultants in Duncan. He and his wife Heather have four sons.
Also acclaimed to the Board was Nanaimo resident Patti Miller. Miller was originally appointed to the Board of Governors in August 2002. Miller will be assuming the role as Vice-Chair, the position previously held by Kenyon.
