Many Malaspina staff, faculty and students don’t need to be told the benefits of commuting responsibly because they already know.
Malaspina student Guillaume Jacques wouldn’t trade his bike for a car. He commutes to Malaspina and work solely by pedal power because it’s cheap, healthy and environmentally friendly.
It takes him less than 20 minutes to bike to Malaspina everyday.
"It’s hard at first," said Guillaume of the physical challenges.
"But it only lasts a few days and then you feel awesome. You feel the results as you’re biking. I’d feel bad driving a car for anything less than a few kilometers."
In an effort to convert more people to alternative and environmentally friendly forms of transportation, Malaspina University-College is hosting a Commuting Fair in honour of Clean Air Day, June 7.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. everyone is invited to check out new commuting bikes, try an electric bike and learn about hybrid vehicles through displays in the plaza in front of the Nanaimo campus library.
June 4 to 10 is Commuter Challenge Week in Canada. Leave your car at home and get to work or school by walking, cycling, in-line skating, public transit, carpooling or working from home.
