Malaspina University-College Carpentry program gets boost from businesses

The Malaspina University-College Carpentry Framer Technician program is a set of blue prints and a nail gun richer thanks to the generosity of Nanaimo and Vancouver-based businesses.

Last month Krastel Design Group Ltd., Azza Blue Print and Midland Tools all made donations to the Nanaimo-based program.

The Jenish House Design blueprints were donated through Nanaimo distributor Krastel Design Group Ltd. and will be used to teach students how to read building plans and estimate materials. As building codes and trends change, so do the tools students need to succeed, said instructor Mike Braun.

"We use blue prints for virtually everything to do with carpentry," said Braun.

"We want students to have a really high quality set of plans to learn from so when they are out in the field they have no problems," said Jenish House Design head designer Ignacio Lara-Faure.

Jenish House Design in Vancouver donates blueprints to universities and colleges across Canada.

From those prints, Braun has made up 16 class copies thanks to a printing donation by Azza Blue Print.

Over the years companies like Azza Blue Print, Midland Tools and Krastel Design Group have supported the Malaspina Carpenter Framer Technician students.

Midland Tools has been especially supportive, said Braun. This time Midland Tools donated a $400 nail gun.

"Over the years they’ve been great to us," said Braun. "Midland Tools asks us for a wish list and then they go to their suppliers and look for donations."

"We've been doing business together for a lot of years," said Tony Wright, the Midland Tools purchaser.

"It's nice to see the students get through school and we don't mind helping out."
