Malaspina launches new Health and Wellness Centre

January 23, 2006 - 4:00pm

Malaspina University-College is launching a new Health and Wellness Centre at the Nanaimo campus Thursday, January 26.

The Centre is being implemented in two phases. Phase one focuses on prevention, information and education, and includes a new website to assist students and employees in addressing their health and wellness needs. Phase two involves the provision of direct health care services on campus.

"Our goal is to offer services and programs that will foster optimum health among students and employees," said project leader Carol Joerin. "These services and programs will be accessible, affordable and responsive to their needs."

Joerin said other key objectives of the Centre are to:

• provide community leadership in developing, implementing and coordinating health and wellness programs on campus for students and employees

• support innovation and learning through professional development, practicum and clinical opportunities

• provide integrated employee health services and programs.

Three Malaspina nursing practicum students, student volunteers, and work-op students are assisting with specific projects and with awareness campaigns. The new website (www.viu.ca/health) provides information on medical care clinics, sexual and reproductive health, alcohol and drug awareness, mental health, spiritual resources, student life and community resources, and alternative health care.

The Centre has started offering educational workshops on health and wellness issues including cold and flu prevention, stress and nutrition. These, and other workshops, will be offered in collaboration with Malaspina faculty, student peers and partnerships with the Vancouver Island Health Authority, said Joerin.

Health and Wellness Centre activities are guided by an advisory committee, which includes representation from students and employees. The Centre operates under the leadership of Malaspina’s Dr. Patrick Ross, vice-president, Student Services, Laureen Styles, Dean, Health and Human Services and Heather Stadel, Director of Human Resources.

The Centre is using temporary space in Malaspina’s International Building at the Nanaimo campus, but a search is underway for a more permanent location.
