New partnerships have been signed between Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo and key educational institutions in China. The new partnerships will result in $350,000 of new business per year for Malaspina, said Bronwyn Jenkins-Deas, Malaspina’s Dean of International Education.
Jenkins-Deas just returned to the Harbour City after participating in Premier Gordon Campbell’s recent Trade Mission to Japan and China, where the new partnerships were forged.
Jenkins-Deas represented Malaspina at an event Nov. 21, designated as British Columbia Education Day in Beijing. The day brought together 16 public post secondary colleges and universities from BC. Nine institutions, including Malaspina, signed a memoranda of understanding with Chinese partners.
“Malaspina signed two agreements,” said Jenkins-Deas. “The first agreement is with Jason Ni, President of The China Occupation Education Group. Starting in September 2007, Malaspina will deliver a joint diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and remote sensing technologies to over 100 students each year in China.”
Malaspina also signed a 10-year agreement with Tony Mou, President of the China Canada Higher Applied Technology College, Shandong Institute of Business and Technology. Under that agreement, students from the Business and Computer Science departments in China will apply for degree completion at Malaspina.
The Canadian and Chinese partners were involved in a round table discussion on education between Canada and China. BC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Minister of Education for joint institutional recognition, added Jenkins-Deas.
“The signings indicate over $350,000 of new business per year for Malaspina University-College,” said Jenkins-Deas. “The importance of having our provincial government support and witness the memorandum of understanding between BC and Chinese institutions can not be overemphasized.
"Our partners were very enthusiastic to have the Premier of our province in China and deeply privileged to have been given the opportunity to participate. Premier Campbell was extremely generous with his time and recognized the importance of relationship building between the partners.”
