Individual solutions to mitigate global climate change will be presented September 21 during a Climate of Change Fair at Malaspina University-College.
"Worldwide temperatures are rising, ice sheets are melting, and ecosystems are shifting, leaving blighted landscapes behind. It is a depressing scenario, but students and staff at Malaspina believe we can create a brighter, more sustainable future," said fair co-organizer Nadine Wiepning.
Sponsored by the Malaspina Climate Change Group, the Climate of Change Fair will present solutions that individuals can use to minimize their contribution to climate change.
"The sooner we get working, the sooner we can reduce the impacts," says Larry Wolfe, environmental consultant, professor and fair co-organizer. "This fair will be a positive, solutions-oriented, festive event to inspire action."
Commencing at 9 a.m. outside Building 300 (upper cafeteria) on the Malaspina University-College campus, this event will include exhibits from campus organizations, local environmentally-responsive businesses and environmental groups.
Energy efficient transportation and buildings, recycling options, and sustainable food choices will be showcased until 4 p.m. While visiting the displays, browsers can enjoy the rhythms of Shane Philip, a Vancouver Island musician whose sounds are inspired by nature.
Keynote speaker Guy Dauncey, author of Stormy Weather and Earthfuture, will speak at 3 p.m. in Building 355 – Room 211. Dauncey will address global warming, sustainable communities and actions individuals can take to reduce their impact on the environment.
The event will close at the Velvet Underground pub with an evening performance by Shane Philip at 9 p.m.
The Malaspina Climate Change Group is a gathering of students, staff and faculty whose goal is to make Malaspina an active regional leader for climate protection. The group’s priorities are to build a strong climate change network, facilitate learning, and promote sustainable lifestyle choices.
