Malaspina’s Golf Program is attracting some of the best young golfers from the local area. When Malaspina spearheaded the development of golf in the BC Colleges’ Athletic Association one of the main reasons was to try to keep local talent at home.

Malaspina approached the Nanaimo Golf Club with the idea of a partnership that would allow team members to play and practice at the club and they were very receptive to the idea. Now, four years later, the Malaspina team is the #1 team in BC and several team members have recently won local amateur events. The Malaspina Athletic Department is thrilled that some of the best young local golfers are choosing to stay home to get their education and develop their golf skills.

Among the local players with the M's are Mark Kitts, the newly-crowned Nanaimo Amateur champion, Parksville's Kyle Hewitt, a B.C. Amateur qualifier and Brett Craigen, the men's club champion at his home course Myrtle Point Golf Club in Powell River.

None of this would be possible without the cooperation of the Nanaimo Golf Club who have been outstanding partners in this venture.
The club professionals have also been the coaching staff for the team and the players have benefited from their expertise.

The team hopes to repeat as Provincial Champions this year and will compete for the CCAA (Canadian Colleges' Athletic Association) National title in Quebec from October 10 to 14.
Malaspina will host the final tournament of the season at the Nanaimo Golf Club on October 21 and 22.

In the first tournament of the season hosted in Selkirk on Sept 16-17 the Mariners placed second.
Mariners Top golfer was Kyle Hewitt with a two day score of 153
Just three more tournaments left in the season.
