Malaspina University-College Adult Basic Education students raised $151.65 to buy books for less fortunate Nanaimo children.
In early December, literacy student Heather Porteous asked her fellow Math 010 and Math 020 classmates what they thought about collecting coins to buy gifts to donate to the annual Great Nanaimo Toy Drive. They enthusiastically embraced the idea and after the box had been passed from room to room, $151.65 was collected. Heather headed to the Malaspina Bookstore and bought 21 children’s books, which she donated to the toy drive. Heather’s enthusiasm also attracted the attention of a local columnist who wrote a story about her in the Neighbourhood Hero.
