Malaspina International High School grad, Chun Yu (Terrence) Tang, was awarded the Governor General’s Bronze Academic Medal for his outstanding academic marks during a school assembly, Jan. 12.

The Hong Kong native came to Canada in September 2005 to finish his high school diploma at Malaspina International High School, which is based at Malaspina University-College’s Nanaimo campus.

“When Terrence came to Malaspina it was very clear he was an extremely dedicated student and he wanted to take every challenging class he could,” said high school principal Tom Lewis. “I think Terrence is a model to all of us. He showed us that if you work hard as a student you can achieve great things.”

Tang earned the bronze medal, which is given to secondary school students who achieve outstanding scholastic marks, for his nearly perfect Grade Point Average of 3.85 out of a possible 4.

“I just aimed to get into the University of British Columbia, so maybe that was my motivator,” said Tang, who was thrilled to receive the prestigious medal.

Tang graduated from Malaspina International High School in June 2006, and is now living out his dream as a student in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia.

The Malaspina International High School is certified by the Government of British Columbia to offer a Grade 10, 11 and 12 high school programs that lead to a British Columbia High School Graduation Diploma. Small class sizes and a post secondary environment make the high school an attractive destination for domestic and international students.
