Up to 700 secondary school students from Duncan to Nanaimo and Powell River will be at Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Nanaimo Campus and local secondary schools on Friday, February 22 for the Skills Canada British Columbia (SkillsBC) Vancouver Island Central competition.

Students will compete to bring home the hardware in a range of different trades, technology and general skills categories, from carpentry and welding to hairdressing and 3D computer animation. New categories this year include electrical wiring, job search, public speaking, robotics, workplace safety, baking and wind turbine construction. The event will also serve to showcase VIU’s new Trades Complex, where some of the competitions will be held.

Gold medal winners at the regional competition will get the chance to compete in the provincial competition, held April 17 at the Abbotsford Tradex. If students win gold at provincials, they earn the chance to compete in the national competition, held at the Halifax Exhibition Centre May 28-29, 2019. To learn more, visit SkillsBC.
