Getting to Know You: VIU Facilities Maintenance team

What they do, what makes their work rewarding and how to connect with them

Every day, Vancouver Island University’s Facilities Maintenance Team plays a vital role in keeping our campuses running smoothly. From electrical and plumbing systems to carpentry, HVAC and emergency response, this diverse group of trades professionals ensures that the more than 50 buildings and extensive grounds on VIU’s Nanaimo campus remain safe, functional and welcoming for students, employees and visitors.

The Facilities Maintenance Team is more than a group of skilled tradespeople. They are friendly and familiar faces around campus who are always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh or offer assistance.

Whether responding to an urgent call, supporting a major campus event or performing the unseen – but essential – work of preventative maintenance, our team members bring dedication, technical expertise and a strong sense of pride in their craft.

Team members say their jobs are about far more than tools and equipment. When asked what drew them to VIU, they gave a wide variety of answers. Some were drawn by the university’s strong reputation, while others came through word of mouth, recommendations from friends, previous work as contractors on campus or casual seasonal postings. A few team members first connected with VIU by attending concerts or events here.

“No two days are ever the same,” says one team member. “We might be troubleshooting a complex electrical issue in the morning and helping prepare for a student event in the afternoon. That variety is what makes this work so rewarding.”

Despite many reasons for coming here, what keeps the members here remains consistent: a sense of community and purpose that is hard to find elsewhere.

Across campus, team members have their favourite spots. Outdoor areas around Buildings 355 and 356 are popular, as are the quad, the upper campus lookouts and peaceful locations like Tamagawa and Okayama gardens. Whether they are taking in the scenery or taking a break between calls, these locations reflect the connection the team has to the campus they care for.

For new employees joining VIU, the team’s advice is simple: get involved, take the time to learn the campus and connect with your colleagues and union community. Make sure you receive a proper orientation because the variety of work means there is always something new to learn.

If you ever have a maintenance need, service request, or emergency concern, please reach out through the Facilities Service Portal or contact us directly at facility@viu.ca. And if you see them out and about in their VIU gear or near one of our fleet vehicles, feel free to say hello.
