Malaspina University-College’s Heavy Duty Commercial Transport Mechanics program has a new addition in its workshop.
On Feb. 8, Ross Somerville, Marketing Manager for Cummins Western Canada, donated a 600 horsepower Cummins ISX Signature Series diesel engine to the program, on behalf of his company. The $45,000 engine is complete, wired and ready to use.
The company also donated diagnostics software for the new engine, and for all the other Cummins engines the program already has. Cummins has consistently been supportive of the Malaspina program by donating annual software updates, technical support and additional engines over the last decade.
“This new engine is a very large asset to the program,” said Paul Mottershead, coordinator and instructor for the Heavy Duty Commercial Transport Mechanics program. “Industry support like this keeps us current with the ever-changing technology in the diesel engine market.”
The new engine will be used by the heavy duty apprentices to learn about engine rebuilds, electronic diagnostics and trouble-shooting skills on Cummins engines.
Cummins is an international company that designs, manufactures, distributes and services engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems.
A new class starts every six weeks at Malaspina’s Heavy Duty Commercial Transport Mechanics program. The next intake is in May for second year apprentices. For more information go to www.viu.ca/heavyduty/faq.asp.
